Tuesday, April 12, 2011
St. Albans, New York - Farmers Boulevard Community Development Corp. (FBCDC) continues to serve the neighborhood of St. Albans, Queens with its 3rd Annual Community Green-Up Day, happening Saturday, May 7, 2011, from 10am to 2pm. The event location is 111-20 Farmers Boulevard, at the African Center for Community Empowerment (ACCE).
In the past two years FBCDC has teamed up with volunteers from ACCE, the NYPD Explorers program out of the 113th precinct in Jamaica, Queens, local residents and property owners in order to pick up trash, sweep sidewalks and tend to tree pits along Farmers Boulevard. This year’s effort will be a day of environmental stewardship complete with educational programs about recycling, composting, and planting.
“New Yorkers have been anxious for Spring, and there’s no better way to celebrate its arrival than by getting outside with friends and neighbors to beautify the community,” said Isa Abdur-Rahman, Executive Director of FBCDC.
Volunteers from all over the city are anticipated for this year’s event, which has already received support from, AmeriCorps volunteers, Royale Basketball Academy, Department of Transportation, Sanitation, Parks & Recreation, NYC Service and Citizens Committee for New York City through the Love Your Block Grant Award. In addition to the clean-up activities, the May 7th event will also include a sidewalk fair featuring products and services available locally to assist with the community’s efforts to take care of our planet.
FBCDC’s Ann Broglin, who is responsible for enhancing this year’s event from a clean-up to a “green-up” day, says, “I am proud to participate in this community effort that will beautify and give back to our neighborhood.”
Students from the after-school program at ACCE will have the opportunity to paint colorful tree-guards and plant flowers in the tree pits on the block of their community center. Adults and seniors are encouraged to come and show off their knowledge of gardening and planting.
